Women in Islam by Sister Sara Potter
Contrary to the popular image portrayed by much of the western media of Islam as a religion which subjugates women, treating them as inferior. If sunnah, (the way of the prophet Mohammed pbuh), is correctly applied and the message of the
Qur'an adhered to the truth of the matter is quite the opposite. Islam asks us to treat women with dignity and respect, and grants them many rights, often not known about or ignored by those who choose to criticise Islam.
“O ye who believe
Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will.
Nor should ye treat them with harshness……..
On the contrary, live with them on a footing of kindness and equity.”
(Surat An-Nisa, verse 19)
“………and reverence the wombs that bore you”
(Surat An-Nisa, verse 1)
Al Tirmithy reported that the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) said:
“None but a noble man treats women in an honourable manner, and none but an
ignoble treats women disgracefully”.
